Self-Examination: The First Step to True Growth

The heart exists, yet it hesitates to accept truths, while it eagerly embraces sweet lies.

This is because most truths often turn into mirrors that compel us to confront ourselves. When we take up the weapon called truth, the one who undergoes its surgery is none other than ourselves.

But is it easy to live by discarding truths?

When we carry the weight of truths, many times they seem to diminish our worth, pressing down upon us.

Because the light of those truths shines from within us alone.

Yet, the moment we begin self-examination without hesitation, it means we have stepped onto the first rung of the ladder called humanity.

The height of that ladder differs according to each person’s state.

Accordingly, the difficulty of our upward journey also varies.

But this journey of self-examination, though indispensable and endless, has a reward—the increase in the measure of peace within the mind.

In your growing life, make it a habit to frequently examine yourself.

No matter how many challenges arise on the path of human life, the strength to face them lies hidden within us.

The true benefit of self-examination is to bring forth that strength.

When we explore the self, the dormant faith, compassion, and love within us awaken.

The moment they awaken is the true birth of a human being.

At every stage of life, what guides us is virtue.

Progress without virtue is like a tree without roots.

No matter how tall a rootless tree grows, even a small gust of wind can topple it.

Likewise, progress without virtue destroys humanity.

Therefore, living with the awareness that virtue is the foundation of progress is our duty.

Today’s younger generation races forward at great speed, reaching the peak of knowledge.

But in that journey of knowledge, love, compassion, and virtue must accompany it.

Only then will that knowledge bring light to humanity.

Otherwise, it will turn into a weapon of darkness.

Hence, the younger generation must weave humanity into every step of their pursuit of knowledge.

That alone will make their success enduring.

The beginning of this inquiry in my own life was delayed, and so I came to realize the strength of my self rather late.

Even now, my inquiry continues as an ongoing story.

Never forget that you have the power to make your life sweet and beautiful.

My trust in you will never fail.

When we open our eyes in the morning, the sun has already awakened and begun its journey.

When night drapes its cloak over the day, the moon wanders its path—sometimes half, sometimes full, sometimes formless.

On certain mornings or evenings, when our bodies grow weary, we rest for a while.

But do the sun, the moon, and the stars ever rest from their duties?

If they were to rest, what would become of our lives?

They do not rest because nature has ordained them to move according to its law.

But as humans who live supported by these celestial bodies, how much respect do we give to the laws ordained for us?

By “laws,” I do not mean the blind customs that bind and suppress human freedom of thought.

I mean the virtues that aid human progress, which are often discarded in the name of those blind customs.

In the name of civilization and modern necessity, many events unfold before our eyes that justify the growth of selfishness.

The desire to progress in life is natural—it is never wrong. But the question remains: what is the limit of that progress?

From a wild way of living, humanity was given rational and just laws to strengthen the value of respecting fellow human beings.

Yet, are we, in the name of being “intellectuals,” breaking those very laws and practicing it under the banner of “progressivism”? That is indeed a valid question!

This is the challenge placed before today’s younger generation.

I hold faith that the younger generation will face it in the right way.

With love,
Sakthi Sakthithasan
