The Flame of Awareness

The Flame of Awareness
An Inner Journey to Light Up Life

Life is not a race,it is an experience. However, in today’s modern world, we are all incessantly running toward some goal or destination.

Do you know what we lose in this frantic chase? We lose ourselves.

Reflecting on this, the world-renowned Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh says, "Inside us, there is a lamp of mindfulness."

Let us explore in detail how to light that lamp and how it dispels the darkness of our lives.

The Inner Lamp
What is Mindfulness?

Many of us seek happiness in the external world through money, status, relationships, or material possessions. But true peace resides within us in a small, steady flame.

That is 'Mindfulness.' Mindfulness means living fully in this moment, without grieving over the past or worrying about the future.

If we imagine our mind as a dark room, as long as the lamp of mindfulness is not lit, shadows like fear, anger, envy, and confusion will dominate us.

The moment that lamp is lit, negative thoughts vanish, and clarity is born.
Breath: Connecting with the Life Force
The first "matchstick" to light this lamp is our Breath.

We live because of our breath, but how many times a day do we actually notice it?

In moments of tension, our breathing becomes rapid.

At that time, if you shift your attention to your breath for just one minute thinking, "I am breathing in, I am breathing out" you will feel your mind instantly settle into peace.

Your breath is the bridge between your body and your mind.

It helps bring your scattered thoughts back into your body.

This is not magic; it is a scientific path to tranquility.

Generally, we view walking from one place to another as a mere task.

However, every time you place a step on the earth, you must feel that contact.

When you walk giving a meaning to every step like "peace" or "happiness" the connection between you and the Earth strengthens.

As your foot touches the ground, feel as though you are laying down all the burdens of the world.

This transforms a mundane walk into a sacred meditation.

"A peaceful smile" this is the oil that keeps the lamp from flickering out.

A smile is not just a movement of the lips, it is a medicine that calms your nervous system.

Rather than smiling just for others, you must learn to smile for yourself.

Waking up in the morning and offering a gentle smile is like a vow.

"A new day has been gifted to me, and I will live it with awareness."

Even in moments of anger, a soft smile protects your inner lamp from the winds of darkness.

In our lives, 'darkness' manifests as worry, frustration, and loneliness. When we lack mindfulness, even small problems seem like giant mountains.

But when the lamp of awareness is lit, problems don't necessarily disappear, but the clarity to face them is born.

For example, when someone feels angry, the moment they realize, "I am feeling angry," that anger begins to dissolve.

This is the true meaning of darkness disappearing.

When we observe ourselves, negative thoughts naturally lose their power.

Mindfulness is not something to be done for one day and then forgotten; it is a continuous practice.

Just as one shields a lit lamp when the wind blows, we must protect our mental peace when the challenges of life arrive.

Whether cooking, driving, or speaking with others, performing every action with total presence is the practice.

If you drink tea, your mind should be fully present in its taste, warmth, and aroma. Only then will the lamp shine brightly.

A great light is hidden within each of us. We do not need to run anywhere in search of it.

In every breath we take, every step we plant, and every smile we share, we can witness that light.

The journey of life is not about walking through a dark cave, it is about lighting the lamp within ourselves and walking in that radiance, guiding others along the way.

At this very second, observe your breath deeply just once...
Your inner lamp has begun to shine!

With love,
Sakthi Sakthithasan
