Perception, Gratitude, Joy: Essential Components of Life's Journey
"Some people, even when presented with a rose garden, will only see the thorns.
Others, even when given a simple weed, will only see the beauty of the wild flower within it.
'Perception' is a key component of 'Gratitude.' And that gratitude is a key component of 'Joy.'"
These phrases speak to a profound truth that determines the complete happiness and peace of our lives.
The circumstances we face in life are secondary.
How we see them is primary.
Let's look at how these three linked aspects 'Perception,' 'Gratitude,' and 'Joy' shape our daily lives.
1. By Perception, Do We See the Rose or the Thorn?
Life is a mix of both rose gardens and weeds.
On some days, everything goes smoothly (the rose garden).
On other days, everything feels like an obstacle (the weed).
This is where our 'Perception' acts as a crucial lens.
For instance, let's consider a middle-class family where a father works hard and buys his son a two-wheeler.
The person who only sees the thorns will dismiss the joy of the gift and the father's hard work, pointing out the lack:
"Dad, everyone has the latest model car. You still bought me just a normal bike. How old-fashioned is this model!"
The person who sees the wild flower will rejoice in what they have: "Dad, I know how hard you worked. This will be so helpful to me.
I won't have to wait for the bus anymore. Your sacrifice is the greatest thing for me."
The event is the same: receiving a two-wheeler.
However, two different perceptions lead to two different emotional outcomes.
Negative perception brings resentment, while positive perception brings contentment.
Our perception is our reality.
2. Gratitude Acts as a Bridge Between Perception and Joy
According to the above quote, a correct 'Perception' (a positive outlook) automatically generates 'Gratitude.
' Seeing the beauty and fragrance of the rose instead of the thorns in the rose garden makes us feel thankful for what we have received.
In our daily lives, from waking up in the morning to falling asleep at night, countless good things happen to us.
Even during a heavy rain, thinking, "At least we have a roof over our heads," is gratitude.
Even after making a small mistake at work, thinking, "I got an opportunity to correct my mistakes," is gratitude.
Even if there is less salt in the food, thinking, "At least I got food without being hungry," is gratitude.
Gratitude is a mental exercise.
It shifts our mind from the habit of thinking about what we don't have to the habit of thinking about what we do have.
It is a magic mirror that highlights the colours of our life.
This feeling of gratitude leads us to the next stage which is Joy.
3. Joy is the Goal of Contentment
The quote concludes by saying that gratitude is the key to 'Joy.'
Joy does not come from the fulfilment of expectations.
It comes from a feeling of contentment with what we have.
How do the daily events of those who live with gratitude unfold?
When facing a challenge:
They do not see challenges as burdens, but as 'opportunities to develop my skills.' Therefore, the success or lesson that comes at the end of the challenge gives them double the joy.
When interacting with others:
They don't look for flaws in people. By thanking them for their small acts of help and their good qualities, their relationships are strengthened, and through these relationships, they gain lasting joy.
When finding happiness in small things:
They experience great joy in simple things like sitting by the window and having tea, laughing with friends, or listening to an old song.
This is because their perception is trained to see the beauty in those small things and feel grateful for it.
Therefore, the formula for a happy life is not in money, position, or fame.
It is in the structure of our inner mind.
Perception > Gratitude > Joy
By understanding this cycle, we must train our minds to set aside the thorns in every rose garden of life and see its beauty in full.
We must learn to find and enjoy the beauty of the wild flower in every weed.
Changing our way of seeing will cultivate a sense of gratitude in our hearts.
That gratitude will bestow upon us a life of complete and unblemished joy.
This is the life lesson conveyed by the quote.
Until we meet again,
Yours lovingly,
Sakthi Sakthithasan
