The Lure of the Shadow and the Reality of Life
"The shadow will always be more beautiful than the reality..."
This statement reflects the condition of every human being living in today's digital world, much like a mirror.
What I refer to as the 'shadow' are the artificial images crafted on social media, the filtered pictures, the exaggerated success stories, and the 'moments of happiness' shared for just a few minutes.
In the life of an ordinary person, this 'shadow world' creates great fascination and aspiration.
An individual living in a middle-class family observes the luxurious travel, expensive possessions, and 'perfect' and complete family relationships shared on social media.
These shadow images appear shiny and seem like achievable goals.
The reality like income tax, home loans, the morning rush to cook, or conflicts in relationships is nowhere to be seen.
The shadow always shows only the bright, flawless side.
As a result, ordinary people begin to compare their real lives with this comparative, artificial shadow.
This comparison leads us to the next part of the saying: "Do not mistake the shadow for the reality and lose your life...!"
When these 'shadows' in the form of social media and cinematic images become the yardsticks for measuring real-life quality, many people lose the beauty and value of their own existence.
For example, instead of enjoying the small happy moments with their family (the reality), they spend more time struggling to photograph and post them to gain likes (the shadow). This quest for external validation causes them to lose the deep satisfaction and peace found in real life.
By purchasing luxury items beyond their financial capability, getting caught in debt, or forgetting their personal talents and transforming themselves into an image that others desire, they begin to lose their real life.
The Positive Change of Embracing Reality
To avoid losing one's life by mistaking the shadow for reality, we must adopt a positive approach and embrace the realities of our daily lives.
An ordinary person should get accustomed to finding happiness internally rather than searching for it externally.
1. Reclaiming the Beauty of Reality (Embracing the Reality):
Real life is full of flaws, growth, and challenges.
What we see on social media may seem like 'the end of a series,' but our real life is an incessant 'series of episodes.'
Therefore, every small progress we make, the quality time spent with family, and the lessons we learn during unexpected difficulties should be considered true success.
It is essential to understand the reality of the effort, failures, and unpolished moments that lie behind the pictures others post on social media.
2. Stopping Comparisons and Realizing Self-Worth:
For peace and contentment to prevail in the life of an ordinary person, the habit of comparative thinking must be completely stopped.
We must abandon the shadowy question, "Why am I not like him/her?" and begin a genuine self-assessment with the question, "What am I, and what have I achieved?" From a positive perspective, every human being is on their unique journey.
Focusing on achieving one's own goals and developing one's own talents, rather than reaching someone else's shadow image, brings true fulfillment.
3. Prioritizing Real Relationships and Experiences:
Stopping the pursuit of the shadow and focusing on nurturing real, deep human relationships prevents one from losing their life.
Spending time, talking face-to-face, and creating memories with family and friends, rather than taking selfies and sharing them, is the true emotional capital.
Turning our eyes away from the mobile screen and beginning to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding world and the love of people is the first step toward moving from the shadow to the reality.
There is no doubt that the shadow will always be beautiful; it is full of illusion.
However, the greatness of an ordinary person lies in accepting the real, deep, and complex life that exists behind that illusion, and in discovering happiness, growth, and love at every stage of it.
Reducing the fascination with the shadow and elevating the value of real life is the best positive life lesson this golden saying offers us. If each of us begins to shine in our reality, the shadow images of others will never affect us.
Until next time,
Yours Lovingly,
Sakthi Sakthithasan
